Research for Real:
  • Works with the questions that matter to people in communities, partnerships and organisations.
  • Promotes participation of community and organisational members at all stages of the research cycle.
  • Values what people already know and builds on knowledge grounded in direct experience.
  • Encourages new conversations to promote understanding, ownership and action.
  • Recognises diversity between and within communities and organisations and seeks to ensure that all voices have the opportunity to be heard.
  • Works collaboratively to test action in the moment, not long afterwards.
  • Uses a mix of tools to gather, analyse and present information.
  • Builds confidence amongst clients to try new approaches.
  • Promotes skills of critical reflection and learning amongst those involved in the research.
  • Undertakes research and evaluation that supports the development of future strategies and a shared sense of ownership amongst those with a stake in their success.
  • Builds social capital and supports capacity building through research and learning.
Research for Real has a UK wide network of associates and specialist research and evaluation partners.

"Cathy Sharp of Research for Real has been working with the Social Enterprise Academy as our 'critical friend' from the time that we delivered our first programme in 2004. Cathy's approach helps us to think about what we are doing all the time, to reflect and identify our learning points. Instead of evaluation being something you do after the event, it is a live part of our day to day activity - keeping us real. Cathy's professional guidance, diligent attention to detail in her research and, most of all, her intelligent insights mean she is a highly valued partner in the peer learning culture we are cultivating."
